First a revolution became tradition, then innovation. Discover Rama through the ages.

How it all began

At the end of the 19th century, the then French Emperor Napoleon lll. offered the proud sum of 100,000 gold francs as a reward for the invention of the first inexpensive alternative to butter. The Frenchman Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès wins the race for the urgently needed energy booster with a cream made from initially purely animal ingredients, which he calls margarine. When creating the word, he was inspired by the Greek word for pearl (márgaron), with which the French inventor alludes to the shimmering surface of his margarine.

"RAMA" is launched on the market

The huge potential of this revolutionary invention was first recognised by the butter merchant Jan Jürgens from Goch, who acquired the patent in 1870. The variety of margarine brands gathered under the umbrella of Deutsche Jürgenswerke AG was ultimately so confusing that in 1924 it was decided to market it under the joint name "Rahma". In order to avoid confusion with pure dairy products such as cream, the "h" was later omitted. Parallel to the naming process, the Rama girl "Jule" was also brought to life. To this day, it is still a real trademark and is now also part of the Rama logo again. As one of the first brands ever, Rama is subsequently advertised nationwide in Germany. Thus, the Rama product history is also an important part of German brand history.
